Tales from the Teacher's Desk · Tale #003

The Student Who Was Always Tired

By From Teacher's Desk2026-07-05

There was a boy I will call Adeel.

He was always tired.

He slept in class.

Forgot homework.

Lost concentration.

Sometimes he looked completely exhausted.

Teachers thought he was lazy.

One day I asked:

“Adeel, what time do you sleep?”

He laughed.

“Sir, around two or three.”

“Why?”

He showed me his phone.

Gaming.

Videos.

Social media.

Messages.

He was spending much of the night online.

Then he was expected to function normally at school the next morning.

I asked:

“How many hours do you sleep?”

“Maybe four.”

That explained some things.

I told him:

“Before deciding that you are lazy, let's check whether you are giving your brain enough rest.”

We didn't try to change everything in one day.

We started with a realistic routine.

A fixed bedtime.

Phone away from the bed.

Reduced late-night gaming.

A simple morning routine.

Short study sessions after school.

He also discussed his sleep difficulties with his parents.

After several weeks, something changed.

He wasn't suddenly a top student.

But he could stay awake.

He could concentrate.

He remembered more.

His teachers thought he had become more motivated.

In reality, he had simply stopped asking an exhausted brain to perform like a rested one.

I told him:

“Technology is a tool.

But if you give your entire night to it, you are borrowing time from tomorrow.”

Sometimes the problem is not a lack of ability.

Sometimes we are simply asking ourselves to perform without giving ourselves the conditions needed to succeed.

Sleep, routine and disciplined technology use are not luxuries.

They are part of learning.
